Ex-Primark CEO Paul Marchant Returns to UK Retail Advising Asda on Budget Clothing

Paul Marchant, the former chief executive officer of Primark, has returned to the UK retail scene in an advisory capacity with Asda, the supermarket chain currently owned by the Issa brothers and TDR Capital. Marchant will consult on the development of Asda’s own-brand clothing line, George, helping the Walmart-born label compete more aggressively in the value fashion segment. His appointment was confirmed Monday and is effective immediately.

Asda’s George brand, while long-established as Britain’s second-largest clothing retailer by volume after Primark, has lost ground in recent years to both Primark and the rapid expansion of discounters like Lidl and Aldi into non-food categories. Marchant’s brief at Asda is expected to cover sourcing strategy, supply chain optimization, and the curation of trend-led collections that can compete with the speed-to-market of the value-fashion leaders.

Marchant’s return to an operational retail role after less than a year away signals that the gravitational pull of the value-fashion sector remains strong. His advisory arrangement allows him flexibility while bringing deep category expertise to Asda without the full commitment of a CEO return. The industry will watch closely to see whether George can recapture the momentum it has ceded to Primark over the past decade.

Marchant stepped down from Primark in November 2025 after 16 years at the helm, during which he transformed the Dublin-based retailer from a UK-centric value player into a European fast-fashion powerhouse with annual revenues exceeding £9 billion. His tenure was marked by rapid store expansion across the continent and the United States, a disciplined refusal to sell online, and a consistent focus on price-led volume growth that competitors found difficult to replicate.

The move represents a significant bet by Asda’s ownership on fashion as a differentiator in the hypercompetitive UK grocery sector. With margins under pressure across food retail, higher-margin general merchandise categories like clothing offer a path to improved profitability. Marchant’s track record of scaling Primark’s margins while maintaining aggressive price points makes him an unusually well-suited advisor for this challenge.
