Isaac Mizrahi’s ‘Unzipped’ Returns to Theaters

The documentary that changed how the fashion world saw itself is coming back to theaters. ‘Unzipped,’ Douglas Keeve’s 1995 fly-on-the-wall portrait of Isaac Mizrahi, has been restored for a September theatrical re-release, introducing a new generation to one of the medium’s most charismatic subjects.

Shot in grainy 16mm during the making of Mizrahi’s Fall 1994 collection, the film captured the designer at his most unfiltered: chain-smoking, improvising, and oscillating between manic confidence and existential doubt with the rhythm of a jazz solo. It remains the gold standard for fashion documentaries.

The re-release comes at a moment when Mizrahi’s cultural stock is once again rising. His recent appointment as creative director at large for Target brought his distinctive blend of high-low sensibility back into the mainstream conversation, and the documentary serves as a time capsule of the energy that first made him a household name.

For younger audiences raised on the polished brand documentaries of the streaming era, ‘Unzipped’ offers something that has become increasingly rare: a portrait of the creative process as genuine chaos, not curated vulnerability.

The September release will be accompanied by a series of Q&A screenings featuring Mizrahi and Keeve in New York, Los Angeles, and London. A broader theatrical rollout is planned, with the distributor betting that the film’s enduring cult status can translate into mainstream box office.

The restoration was overseen by Keeve himself, who supervised a 4K scan from the original camera negatives. The upgrade reveals textures and details that were lost in the original theatrical prints, particularly in the backstage sequences shot in dimly lit workrooms.
