Fashion Launches a New Climate Coalition as Reductions Stay Elusive

At New York Climate Week, fashion again promised to turn talk into action with the launch of a new coalition bringing together dozens of brands, manufacturers, retailers, and innovators. The ambition is real; the reductions remain tantalisingly out of reach.

The coalition’s value rests in scale and coordination. Fragmentary efforts have long been the sector’s weakness, with individual brands cutting narrowly while shared infrastructure, logistics, and materials go unaddressed.

The stubbornness of the emissions figure points to the problem’s structure. Progress in energy efficiency and circular models is real but is being outpaced by growth in volume and complexity, a race reduction is losing.

The framing carries a familiar echo. Each year the industry gathers, articulates shared goals, and commits to transparency, yet the hard numbers move slowly. A recent analysis found emissions tied to fashion’s raw materials have risen about 30 percent since 2019.

Industry leaders argue the coalition differs by binding participants to shared reporting and measurable milestones, a break from the voluntary statements of past seasons.
