Comme des Garcons Turns Denim Toward the Grand, the Royal, and the Daily

Denim has never been a fabric that summers at Rei Kawakubo’s runway table. It belongs to the American West and her native Japan, to workwear and streetwear, not to the imposing, sculptural forms she usually assembles for Comme des Garcons. For S/S 2027, Kawakubo brought it inside anyway.

That tension is the whole of the statement. Denim, the most democratic of cloths, is here coerced into the language of grandeur — hoops, panels, couture-scale construction — then allowed to keep its flat, honest blue. The juxtaposition of humble fibre and ambitious form is precisely what gives the work its frisson.

The collection was built around denim’s sturdy, unglamorous grain, cut into her trademark volumes: enormous spherical skirts that cracked open to release cascades of red ruffle, undulating panelled jackets that flared dramatically at the waist. Kawakubo described the collection in her typically cryptic tongue, noting that ‘when royal life and everyday life become one.’

The gesture lands at a cultural moment when the hierarchies that once separated hard-wearing cloth from high fashion have collapsed. Luxury maisons now treat denim as a canvas for embroidery and tailoring, while wash-and-wear labels push into runway territory. Kawakubo simply short-circuits the question by giving the humblest fabric the most elaborate architecture.

The result is not a trend to copy literally but a provocation about what materials can be made to mean. In using workwear blue to crown an almost royal silhouette, Kawakubo reminds the industry that the distance between the everyday and the ceremonial is a matter of cut, not cloth.

If the fashion conversation of the season was about finding integrity in a period of uncertainty, Kawakubo’s denim offered the purest resolution: build something magnificent, and let the material tell the truth.
