Hermès has opened a new boutique at Chatswood Chase in Sydney, bringing its distinctive retail vocabulary to the North Shore. The store’s interior draws on the surrounding landscape — Sydney’s harbour, its coastal rivers, and the play of light across the water — translated into a spatial experience through curved timber walls and a gradient watercolour effect that shifts across the ceiling.
The material palette reflects the maison’s characteristic restraint. Double-curved wooden panels form the backbone of the interior, their warm grain offset by a textured patterned carpet that softens the acoustic environment. The result is a space that feels both monumental and domestic — a quality that Hermès boutiques strive for but rarely achieve with this degree of coherence.
To mark the opening, Hermès commissioned London-based artist Katie Scott to transform the store’s front window into an installation titled ‘Worlds Beyond.’ Scott’s work, which blends botanical illustration with surrealist composition, interprets the house’s annual theme of venturing beyond the known into a layered visual narrative that draws passersby into the store’s orbit.
The Chatswood Chase opening continues Hermès’ measured expansion across the Asia-Pacific region, where the brand has maintained consistent growth even as other luxury houses have reported softening demand. Sydney represents a strategic market for Hermès — the city’s concentration of high-net-worth individuals and its role as a gateway to the broader Australian luxury market make it a retail priority.
