Kartik Research Takes Indian Craft to Pitti Uomo

Kartik Research will be the guest designer at Pitti Uomo 111 in Florence, presenting on January 13 during a fair that runs from the twelfth to the fifteenth.

The label, founded and led by Kartik Kumra, works from South Asian references and an artisanal production model. The appointment places it alongside Dunhill as one of the edition’s two guests.

Kumra’s collections have leaned toward tailoring with uneven surfaces, garment-dyed and hand-finished cloth, and shapes that borrow from regional dress without reproducing it.

Pitti is a particular kind of platform. It is a trade fair before it is a fashion week, and a guest slot there is a manufacturing introduction as much as an editorial one.

That suits a label whose proposition depends on its supply chain. Indian craft capacity is deep, fragmented and expensive to coordinate, which is exactly the problem a Florence presentation can help solve.

The market filter is pricing. Artisanal production places a shirt in a band where the customer expects a name, a fit and a story, and Kumra has to supply all three.

Craft has become a platform story. A guest slot at Pitti is won by a label that can scale handwork beyond the atelier, not merely display it.
