Mammut, the Swiss outdoor brand that helped define the soft-shell category, has been acquired by CPE — the private equity firm known for investments in Pop Mart and Laopu Gold. The deal lands at the crest of China’s premium outdoor boom.
The deal also signals a broader pattern. Private equity’s appetite for heritage European brands with untapped Asian potential has been growing, and CPE’s portfolio logic — cultural resonance plus distribution upside — is becoming the template for the category.
The outdoor sector’s momentum is backed by numbers. China’s hiking, camping, and skiing cultures have expanded rapidly, and global technical brands have found the region increasingly willing to pay for genuine alpine credibility.
For CPE, the logic runs through China’s shifting consumer landscape. As urban Chinese shoppers trade down from luxury handbags toward performance gear and outdoor experiences, technical apparel has become a premium category in its own right.
The acquisition reshuffles a storied heritage. Founded in 1862, Mammut built its reputation on alpine equipment and technical apparel, evolving from rope-maker to one of Europe’s most respected mountain brands.
