Labubu Cools, and the Blind Box Learns Its Limits

Pop Mart reported quarterly sales falling by as much as half, with the Americas down 70 to 75 percent, and the descent is being read as the moment a plush charm stopped being a personality. Labubu had spent two years clipped to handbags from Seoul to SoHo.

Blind box economics depend on scarcity performed in public. When supply expands, and when every second person has the same vinyl grin on the same leather strap, the object stops signalling taste and starts signalling timing.

The object itself was never complicated. A grinning, toothy figure with a fur face and a vinyl body, sold blind, sized to hang from a strap. Its genius was scale: small enough to be an accessory, cheap enough to be repeatable, strange enough to be photographed.

Meanwhile the charms remain on the bags, quietly demoted from statement to habit, which is where most accessories end up once the camera has moved on.

Resale tells the story before the earnings do. Premiums on the secondary market compress first, then the queue outside the store shortens, then the quarterly number arrives to confirm what the group chat already knew.
