Yu Mei is no longer just a leather goods house. The New Zealand brand, known for its structured bags and carbon-neutral supply chain, has debuted its first ready-to-wear collection at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi, marking a significant evolution of its design vocabulary.
Whether Yu Mei’s ready-to-wear can achieve the same cult following as its bags remains an open question. But the brand has made a convincing first argument: the same hand that cuts a great bag can also cut a great coat.
The collection, titled ‘Salon Yu Mei’, comprises 36 individual pieces — a tightly edited proposition that prioritizes considered construction over seasonal volume. The garments share a design language with the brand’s accessories: clean lines, architectural volume, and a tactile sensitivity to material.
For a brand that achieved B Corp certification and carbon-neutral status, the move into ready-to-wear represents a test of whether those values translate beyond the accessories category. The collection uses deadstock fabrics and local production partners wherever possible, extending the ethical framework established by the leather goods line.
The silhouettes are generous without being shapeless — coats with clean shoulder lines, trousers cut to move with the body, dresses that fold and wrap. Yu Mei’s design director has described the collection as ‘wardrobe architecture,’ a phrase that captures the precision with which each piece has been developed.
Presented as part of Common Material, the inaugural edition of what its founders intend to grow into a Wellington Biennial of design, the collection bridges the gap between art object and wearable garment. The setting was deliberate: Yu Mei has always positioned itself at the intersection of craft and conceptual design.
