Gucci Unveils ‘Generation Gucci’ Exhibition at Palazzo Gucci, Bridging Archival Heritage and Contemporary Vision

Gucci has opened the doors to ‘Generation Gucci,’ an immersive exhibition at the brand’s historic Palazzo Gucci in Florence that traces the house’s evolution from its origins as a luggage atelier to its current position as one of fashion’s most culturally influential forces. The exhibition, which runs through the autumn, is both a retrospective and a manifesto — a statement about where the brand has been and where it intends to go.

The palazzo itself is a character in the story. Located in Florence’s historic centre, the building has served as Gucci’s headquarters and creative nerve centre for decades. The exhibition makes use of its grand salons and intimate chambers, creating a spatial journey that mirrors the brand’s chronological trajectory — from the equestrian-inspired luggage of founder Guccio Gucci to the maximalist vision of Tom Ford’s 1990s, the quiet luxury of Frida Giannini’s tenure, and the current chapter under Sabato De Sarno.

The exhibition’s design, overseen by celebrated curator and set designer Es Devlin, uses video projections, sound installations, and interactive elements to create an atmosphere of immersion rather than education. Visitors are not simply viewing objects; they are inhabiting a sensory environment that evokes the cultural moment of each era — the jazz of 1950s Milan, the disco of 1970s New York, the digital cacophony of contemporary fashion.

What distinguishes ‘Generation Gucci’ from the standard house retrospective is its emphasis on the present. Rather than treating the archive as a closed book, the exhibition positions it as a living resource — a source code that can be endlessly recompiled. De Sarno’s current designs are displayed alongside the archival pieces that inspired them, creating a visual dialogue across decades that suggests continuity rather than rupture.
