Fast Retailing’s GU Unveils First Collection by Francesco Risso

GU, the lower-priced sibling to Uniqlo within Fast Retailing’s portfolio, has unveiled its first collection under the creative direction of Francesco Risso. The Italian designer, best known for his exuberant, pattern-driven work at Marni, has translated his distinctive vocabulary into a range that starts at roughly eighteen dollars.

The early reception has been strong in GU’s home market of Japan, where the collection launched online and in select flagship stores. International expansion is reportedly under consideration, though Fast Retailing has not committed to a timeline. For now, the collection exists as a proof of concept: that avant-garde design can survive the journey to mass production without losing its character.

The pricing strategy is the collection’s most radical gesture. A pair of Risso-designed wide-leg denim sells for roughly eighteen dollars—a fraction of what a similar silhouette would cost at Marni, and less than many fast-fashion interpretations of the same proportions. The economics work because GU’s supply chain, shared with Uniqlo, operates at a scale that few competitors can match.

The collection reads as a deliberate provocation: bold painterly prints, exaggerated proportions, and colour combinations that would feel at home on a Marni runway, now rendered in GU’s lightweight, mass-producible fabrics. The silhouette leans oversized—boxy jackets with dropped shoulders, wide-leg trousers cut with generous ease, and T-shirts printed with abstract motifs that recall Risso’s collage-based visual language.

Risso’s appointment at GU was announced earlier this year as part of Fast Retailing’s effort to differentiate the brand from its older sibling. Where Uniqlo trades in engineered minimalism and performance fabrics, GU targets a younger, trend-faster customer who wants fashion-forward statements at disposable price points. The Francesco Risso GU collection makes that distinction explicit.
