Wonderland Hands Its Masthead to a Stylist’s Eye

Carlos Nazario has been appointed editor in chief of Wonderland, reuniting the stylist with Alastair McKimm, who serves as chief creative officer of the title’s parent, Visual Talent Ltd. It is a hire that treats the magazine as an image first and a text second.

Wonderland’s position as an independent, London-rooted title also matters here. Without a conglomerate’s advertising apparatus behind it, its authority rests entirely on the coherence of its point of view, which is precisely the thing a stylist is equipped to defend.

There is a risk in that concentration. A title led by a single strong visual signature can become a portfolio with a barcode, and the difference between a magazine and a lookbook is the willingness to publish something the editor did not personally style.

That ordering is not incidental. Nazario built his reputation on casting and wardrobe, on the kind of styling that treats a garment as a sentence in a longer argument about who gets to be photographed and how.

The appointment lands in a year when several titles have reorganized around creative direction rather than editorial direction, and when the two roles are increasingly performed by the same person.
