Pierre Cardin showed spring 2027 at an ice rink in Paris, with models walking the perimeter while skaters spun through the middle of the room. The venue was not a conceit. It was the closest thing the house could find to the environment its clothes have been dressing since the 1960s.
The fit is the giveaway. My suits are very skinny, very close to the skin, he explained, and he imagines a moment when each person owns garments fitted individually, cooled in summer and warmed in winter by tiny internal pumps.
His proposal for the future is almost aggressively plain. We have to be comfortable, we can be elegant, he said, and the collection tried to prove that sportswear and tailoring can occupy the same garment without either surrendering.
Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin, who is both designer and chief executive, has been working with the European Space Agency on suits astronauts use for training ahead of future moon missions. Several of the solutions developed there were carried into the ready-to-wear.
