De Beers to Shutter South African Diamond Mine to Save Cash

De Beers will halt production at a major South African diamond mine for two years as part of a sweeping cost-cutting program, the company confirmed this week. The move comes amid sustained pressure on diamond prices and a broader recalibration of the luxury raw-materials market that has seen the diamond giant slash prices and restructure its operations across multiple geographies.

The South African government has expressed concern about the economic impact on mining communities in the Northern Cape, where the mine is a major employer. De Beers has committed to maintaining its social investment programs in the region during the shutdown and has offered voluntary severance packages to affected workers.

For the luxury fashion and jewellery industry, the contraction at the supply level has not yet translated into higher retail prices. Brands like Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and Boucheron have absorbed much of the raw-material cost relief into margins rather than passing savings to consumers. But a sustained reduction in natural diamond supply could eventually tighten availability at the top end of the market.

The mine in question, located in the Northern Cape province, has been a steady contributor to De Beers’ African output for decades. The two-year shutdown is framed as a preservation measure: rather than operating at a loss in a depressed pricing environment, the company will absorb the fixed costs of idling the site and ramp up production at lower-cost operations elsewhere to maintain overall output targets.

The diamond market has been under strain since 2023, when the post-pandemic demand surge collided with a glut of lab-grown stones and shifting consumer preferences among younger buyers. Natural diamond prices have fallen approximately 25 percent from their 2022 peak, and De Beers has been forced to offer rough stones at steeper discounts to its sightholders to maintain sales volume.
