RIMOWA has opened its newest boutique at Chatswood Chase in Sydney, marking the German luggage manufacturer’s fourth retail location in Australia. The store, spanning nearly 125 square meters, represents a significant bet on the resilience of the luxury travel goods market in a region where international tourism continues its steady post-pandemic recovery. For a brand whose aluminum grooved suitcases have become synonymous with aspirational mobility, the expansion into Sydney’s affluent North Shore suggests a deliberate strategy of meeting customers where they live — literally.
The product offering spans RIMOWA’s full range, from the iconic grooved aluminum suitcases — the Original Cabin, Check-In L, and Trunk Plus — to the newer, leather-centric Never Still collection and the recently introduced Original Bag, a handbag that adapts the brand’s signature grooved aesthetic to an everyday silhouette. The store also carries limited-edition collaborations, including pieces from RIMOWA’s ongoing partnership with Porsche and select artist editions, which are increasingly becoming collector’s items in their own right.
The Chatswood Chase location joins existing Australian outposts in Sydney’s CBD, Melbourne’s Collins Street, and Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall. RIMOWA’s parent company, LVMH, has been steadily expanding the brand’s retail footprint since its acquisition in 2016, transforming it from a luggage manufacturer into a lifestyle brand with accessories, apparel collaborations, and even eyewear. The Australian market has proven particularly receptive to this evolution, with the country’s geography — vast, isolated, travel-dependent — making high-quality luggage a near-necessity for the affluent consumer.
What makes the RIMOWA retail experience distinct is its emphasis on repair and aftercare. Each boutique includes a dedicated service counter where customers can have their cases polished, have wheels replaced, or order spare parts — a commitment to longevity that feels increasingly radical in a fashion industry built on disposability. In an era when luggage is often treated as consumable, RIMOWA’s approach suggests that the most sustainable product is the one you never replace.
The boutique’s design follows the architectural template RIMOWA has refined across its global fleet, incorporating the signature Brückengrün — the bridge green hue that references the color of Cologne’s Severinsbrücke and Hohenzollernbrücke — as a defining interior element. The shade appears on wall paneling, display fixtures, and the store’s facade, creating a visual continuity that allows the brand to feel simultaneously global and rooted. The effect is of stepping into a carefully designed transit lounge: clean, efficient, and suggestive of movement.
