Samuel Gui Yang opened its first store on October 10 at 508 Julu Road in Shanghai, a 1,300-square-foot room on the first floor of an Art Deco residential building.
The store is currently operated by Labelhood, the local multibrand retailer, a structure that lets the label test retail without building a wholesale organisation overnight.
The interior is built around a sunken alcove and a mezzanine, with floor-to-ceiling metal display systems, matte concrete tile and an antique Eight Immortals table holding the centre.
The pieces sit at a contemporary designer price tier and are made to be worn across seasons rather than collected, which suits a neighbourhood store where the same customers return.
