Bloomingdale’s chief executive Olivier Bron has spent three years repositioning the retailer from premium contemporary toward a luxury standard he associates with Asian and European flagships.
Bron joined in 2023 after leading retailers abroad, and he has framed the agenda under a strategy the company calls Dream Big.
The repositioning also reorients the comparison set. Bron has said the business benchmarks against international peers rather than domestic department stores, a choice that changes what the assortment has to do.
That shift is expensive. Luxury brands allocate space on their own terms, and a retailer moving upmarket has to accept their conditions on shop-in-shops, staffing and exclusivity.
The department store’s future looks less like a catalogue of brands and more like a programming calendar. Bloomingdale’s is testing whether an American retailer can run that model at scale.
