Serotonin Shoes: Why Fashion’s Latest Mood Boost Sits at Ground Level

In a world craving escapism, imaginative footwear has become fashion’s small dose of joy. At the fall/winter 2026 couture shows, the thesis came into focus: Chanel extended its “Jack and the Beanstalk” fantasy to the feet, with pearl-adorned bean sprouts and gilded eggs serving as heels.

Dior’s Jonathan Anderson worked the same register with pointed- and square-toe pumps rife with tassels, embellishments and metallic bows, and floral heels that looked plucked from the Jardin des Tuileries. At Dries van Noten, Julian Klasner pushed print into sequined, crystallized finishes.

The statement shoe is a time-honored way to transform a simple outfit, but the recent iterations go further, transporting the wearer to another universe entirely. “I just think shoes spark joy,” says New York fashion creator Sophie Cohen. “And that is what people are really looking for in fashion these days.”

The whimsy was detailed and deliberate. Chanel’s storybook pairs arrived with enamel butterflies, miniature figurines and flower petals, some with sheer toe caps and tangled beads echoing the runway looks they accompanied.

With climate dread and cultural chaos as backdrop, the collectible shoe functions as a mood booster with a physical form, an entry point into fun that does not demand a full wardrobe commitment.

“Shoes have a collectible element that doesn’t exist in most other fashion products,” says Ryan Kleman, Moda Operandi’s vice president of non-apparel. “Top clients regularly buy shoes that they know won’t do any walking, but simply to add them to their collection.”

The question is whether whimsy will hold once the collections land in stores. If the couture versions translate into commercial runs, the serotonin shoe may be less a passing fancy than a permanent fixture of the dressed-down era.
