A surplice is a loose fitting, sleeveless dress that has gathered or pleated bodices. The term “surplice” derives from the Latin word for “overlapping.” This style of dress was popularized during the medieval period as a garment worn by priests and nuns. It became more widely used in modern times when designers like Christian Dior incorporated it into their designs. Today, this style can be found on dresses, skirts, tops, blouses and even shirts!

The surplice style differs from the wrap in that it closes with a diagonal seam. Wraps often have strings to hold them shut, which can cause gaping at times.
